Task 3 Landform Physiography Map
Physiography has considerable influence on natural vegetation in GAAR. Although analysis of digital elevation models and derivatives such as slope and aspect contribute to quantifying this influence, geomorphology or landform is difficult to derive from automated image processing/GIS procedures. This combination of terrain and geologic parameters which define a landform can be more accurately delineated through expert image interpretation (satellite and aerial photo) together with existing topographic and geologic maps.
The project objective is to develop an Arc/INFO format landform
map at 1:250,000 scale of GAAR and surrounding area to the limits of the
Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery selected for use in Task
Order 1. The primary purpose of this database will be to improve
the landcover map (Task Order 1) through the development and implement
of environmental site models for each of the mapping classes.
The main source material used will be 1:250,000 plots of the Landsat Thematic
Mapper imagery. Mylar USGS 1:250,000 topographic quadrangles will
be overlaid on the imagery to assist in the manual interpretation, along
with reference to 1:60,000 CIR photography and surficial geology maps where
available. It is expected that there will be approximately 5 polygons per
1:63,360 quad equivalent area and 20-30 classes in the map.
Mosaics of classes may be included within polygons if appropriate at the
mapping scale and level of detail. Estimated timeframe for completion
of this task is May 1998.
