Task 4 Image Enhancements
("Wall Art")of Glacier Bay and Kenai Fjords. Landsat TM scenes of Glacier Bay and Kenai Fjords National Parks were spectrally enhanced to maximize vegetation discrimination.
Extensive areas of both snow and ice (high spectral values), such as
in the scene of Glacier Bay below can cause a skewing of spectral brightness
values. This sometimes makes bringing out vegetation
differences challenging. Vegetation typically shows up in shades
of red in the 4,3,2 band combination (Color Infared (CIR)) shown below.
Several iterations with the scene's histogram break-points had to be conducted
to achieve the desired contrast both within the vegetated areas and between
vegetation and snow/ice.
In the scene of Kenai Fjords shown below, the problematic areas of snow
were masked and removed from the image, before applying a 7,4,2 band combination
to the scene. The snow mask was then reintroduced as with a 4,3,2
band combination.
