Task 6 Surficial Geology - GAAR

This task involves the digitizing, attributing and edge-matching of 1:250,000 surficial geology maps for Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (GAAR) in North-Central Alaska.  The source maps were compiled by Tom Hamilton, USGS, between 1977 and 1999.  Dr. Hamilton completed compilation of 2 of the 10 quadrangles as part of this project, and provided guidance and assistance in editing the individual mapsheets, and in compositing portions of the 10 quadrangles into a single GAAR-wide map and legend.  The final products include GIS-compatible digitized data layers topologically structured as Arc/INFO (TSAI) files, and include most essential geologic information and detailed map legend information (introduction and full map unit description text) found on the published maps.  These products are conveniently arranged in an ArcView 3.x project (*.apr) on a single CD for easy access and application by NPS users.  The first application of this product was in development of the GAAR Land Cover products (Task 1) in 1999.
