Eyeing the Gulf for Potential Tropical Development this Weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 22, 2012 9:00 ET

GAITHERSBURG, MD - (June 22, 2012) A broad area of low pressure north of the Yucatan Peninsula is expected to drift slowly northward and into the southern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. While still disorganized this morning, the system looks to become better organized as it stalls over the open, warm waters of the Gulf. Currently at 28C (82F), sea surface temperatures are favorable for both the development and sustaining of tropical systems. They are not, however, at the levels to support rapid intensification.

As time progresses, uncertainty increases in both the future path of the storm as well as its eventual strength and intensity. One potential track of the storm ushers it westward as a result of strong ridging in the central United States. This track would lead to a possible landfall in Texas or northern Mexico. The alternate track shows the storm remaining fairly stationary in the Gulf and eventually drifting northeast and onshore over Florida or the southeast Gulf states.

Should the storm develop slower and weaker, heavy rains would increase concerns of flooding in low lying refinery areas. Should a stronger tropical system form, strong winds and high waves would impact the infrastructure of the rigs, leading to disruptions to crude production and natural gas extractions. Developments on this storm will continue to be monitored through the weekend.

“Gulf interests should be on the watch this weekend for the potential development of what could become Debby. By late this weekend or early next week, more concise details will give better indications on the path and effects from the storm,” says Travis Hartman, Energy Weather Manager and Meteorologist at MDA EarthSat.
