Frost to Impact Northwestern Midwest Thursday and Friday Mornings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 13, 2011 10:00 ET

GAITHERSBURG, MD - (September 13, 2011) MDA EarthSat (CropCAST) is forecasting subfreezing temperatures on Thursday and Friday mornings across northwestern portions of the Midwest as a strong area of high pressure drops southward from Canada. “Temperatures are expected to drop below the freezing mark across eastern South Dakota, most of Minnesota, and northwestern Wisconsin on Thursday morning, and central Wisconsin on Friday morning bringing an end to the growing season in those areas” said Kyle Tapley, Senior Agricultural Meteorologist for CropCAST. “Normally, the first fall freeze in these areas occurs during the last ten days of September, so this freeze is about 1 week ahead of normal.” There is a risk that the frost could reach slightly further south than currently forecast. “It is not out of the question that temperatures could drop below freezing as far south as far northern Iowa on Thursday morning as well as the Wisconsin/Illinois border on Friday morning,” Tapley adds. While the freeze will not cause much damage to the corn crop, the primary impacts will fall upon the soybean crop. “The corn crop should see little or no damage since it is near maturity. However, the freeze will cut off the tail end of soybean growth and will also lead to a reduction in oil content.” said Mr. Tapley. Following the cold snap, temperatures are expected rebound across the Midwest this weekend and early next week, with no additional frost threats expected through at least the end of next week.
