Sharp Cool-Down to Bring Record Challenging Cold to Parts of MISO and PJM Later This Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 12, 2011 13:00 ET
GAITHERSBURG, MD—(September 12, 2011) Overnight low temperature records will be challenged in parts of MISO and PJM this week, resulting in an early dose of heating demand. An unusually strong cold front progresses through the Midwest and East this week, bringing with it a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially at night. The peak of the cold occurs across the Midwest Thursday and Friday. A forecast morning low of 35F in Minneapolis Thursday morning would break the previous record of 36F from 2007. Friday morning, Minneapolis is forecast to tie their record low of 38F from 1873. The same morning, Chicago will fall to 38F, one degree from their record of 37F from 1984. The unseasonable cold reaches as far south as the Mississippi Valley these days, with St. Louis falling into the 40s Friday morning as well. The cold front moves into the Northeast Friday through Sunday. While not as extreme as over the Midwest, temperature anomalies will drop considerably here as well.
“This cold shot will be the first sure sign that winter is not too far off, as widespread 30s appear likely in the Midwest by later this week,” says Bob Haas, Operations Manager & Meteorologist at MDA EarthSat. “The increased heating demand associated with the chill won’t last for more than a few days though, as warming trends should return by early next week.”
