Tropical Depression #13 Forms in Gulf; Disruption to Production Already Occurring
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 2, 2011 11:00 ET
GAITHERSBURG, MD—(September 2, 2011) Tropical Depression #13 formed last evening in the Gulf of Mexico and should intensify into a tropical storm later today or over the weekend. Even as a depression, disruptions to oil and gas production in the Gulf have already been experienced. While an increase to a weak hurricane is not out of the question prior to landfall, the greater impacts of the storm will come in the form of gale force winds over the rigs and flooding rains onshore. Tropical storms warnings are in effect for coastal areas of Louisiana and Mississippi. The storm, presently sitting around 240 miles southwest from the mouth of the Mississippi, has stalled and will move very little over the next 24-48 hours. After that time, the path of the storm is expected to take a north-northeast route, moving inland over central Louisiana by early next week. Outer rain bands are already falling over the warned areas, with much more to come over the next few days. Amounts upwards of 20” or more are very possible over the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts, and as a result, a state of emergency has already been declared in the state of Louisiana.
“What this storm may lack in intensity, it should make up for in duration as it crawls northward,” says Bob Haas, Weather Operations Manager and Meteorologist at MDA EarthSat. “Several days of decreased oil and gas production and major inland flooding are clear concerns with this system.”
